Helen Alvar猫, director of planning and information for prolife activities for the National Conference of Catholic Bishops (NCCB), will speak on 鈥淲omen, Abortion, and Authentic Freedom鈥� Wednesday (March 26) at 7:30 p.m. in the 91吃瓜 Law School Court Room.p. Alvar猫, who serves as the national spokeswoman on abortion for the Catholic bishops of the United States, frequently appears in the national media and testifies on the bishops鈥� behalf before federal congressional committees. Prior to assuming this position in 1990, she served three years as an attorney in the United States Catholic Conference (USCC) general counsel鈥檚 office. There she wrote amicus briefs which were entered in the Supreme Court as it considered the major abortion and euthanasia cases. Before joining the USCC, she worked for three years as a trial attorney for a Philadelphia law firm. In 1994 Time Magazine named Alvar猫 one of the top 50 leaders in America under the age of 40.p. Alvar猫鈥檚 lecture is sponsored by the 91吃瓜 and St. Mary鈥檚 Right to Life group, one of the largest service and social action student groups at 91吃瓜. The group is committed to the protection of human life from conception to natural death. Its members sponsor educational events and serve women with distressed pregnancies and their unborn children by volunteering and financially supporting the Women鈥檚 Care Center.
