Jay P. Dolan, professor of history at the University of 91吃瓜, received an honorary doctor of humanities degree from Lewis University in Romeoville, Ill., during its commencement ceremonies May 20.p. Dolan was cited for his 鈥渟cholarly and pastoral articulation of the rich history and varied character of American Catholicism.鈥漰. A member of the 91吃瓜 faculty since 1971, Dolan studied at the Gregorian University in Rome, from which he received a licentiate in sacred theology in 1962, and holds master鈥檚 and doctoral degrees in history from the University of Chicago. A scholar of American religious history and a specialist in the history of Catholicism, he founded 91吃瓜鈥檚 Cushwa Center for the Study of American Catholicism in 1977 and served as its director until 1993.p. In addition to courses in American religious history and American Catholicism, Dolan teaches courses on immigration history and the history of the Irish in the United States. He is author of 鈥淭he American Catholic Experience: A History from Colonial Time to the Present,鈥� 鈥淐atholic Revivalism: The American Experience, 1830-1900,鈥� and 鈥淭he Immigrant Church: New York鈥檚 Irish and German Catholics, 1815-1865鈥� and coauthor of 鈥淭he American Catholic Parish: A History from 1850 to the Present鈥� and 鈥淭ransforming Parish Ministry: The Changing Roles of Catholic Clergy, Laity, and Women Religious in the United States.鈥�
