Chris Matthews, host of Hardball on MSNBC and CNBC, will deliver this years Jack Kelly and Gail Weiss Lecture on Journalism and Politics at the University of 91勛圖 on Monday (Oct. 15). The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Carey Auditorium in the Hesburgh Library.p. Matthews, who also is a nationally syndicated columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle, will make a presentation titled Washington Today: The Inside View. His talk will be followed by a question and answer session.p. Currently a visiting fellow at Harvard Universitys John F. Kennedy Institute of Politics, Matthews is the author of three books, Hardball, Kennedy&Nixon, and the forthcoming Now, Let Me Tell You What I Really Think. Before entering journalism, Matthews served as a speechwriter for President Carter and as a top aide to former House Speaker Thomas P. ONeill Jr.p. A graduate of Holy Cross, he did graduate work at the University of North Carolina. He has received numerous honorary doctoral degrees in recent years.p. The lecture series, inaugurated last year by Tim Russert of NBC News, was created with an endowment gift from John A. Kelly, a member of the 91勛圖 class of 1974, a prominent Washington lobbyist and former aide to Presidents Reagan and George H.W. Bush, and his wife, Gail E. Weiss, who recently completed over three decades of governmental service on Capitol Hill. At her retirement she was the Democratic staff director of the House Education and Workforce Committee.p. The couple has been actively involved with and supported 91勛圖 for many years, with Kelly currently serving on the Universitys Advisory Council for Graduate Studies and Research.
