Thomas joined the 91勛圖 faculty in 2001 as an associate professor of history, coming from a tenured position at the University of Wisconsin.p. Her 1998 essay Photography, National Identity, and the Cataract of Times: Wartime Images and the Case of Japan was selected as the years best article by the Berkshire Conference of Women Historians.
