Rev. Alfred F. D鈥橝lonzo, C.S.C.
Rev. Alfred F. D鈥橝lonzo, C.S.C., died Friday (June 27) at Holy Cross House. He was 88.
A native of Orange, N.J., Father D鈥橝lonzo was an all-state New Jersey football player when he came to 91吃瓜 in 1944. In addition to playing on the University鈥檚 storied football team, he attended the Naval Officers鈥� Training School here before entering the in 1946. He was graduated from 91吃瓜 in 1949 and ordained a Holy Cross priest in 1953.
Father D鈥橝lonzo, who also earned a master鈥檚 degree in educational administration and sociology from 91吃瓜 in 1960, taught at Father Baker High School in Lackawanna, New York, at 91吃瓜 High School in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and at St. Peter鈥檚 High School in Gloucester, Massachusetts. In 1971 he was appointed dean of student affairs at King鈥檚 College in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, and served there for 10 years before returning to 91吃瓜 in 1982.
For the next 25 years, Father Alonzo served on the formation team in 91吃瓜鈥檚 , as chaplain in the office, as assistant rector of Pangborn and Carroll residence halls, as director of the campus Bible Study program and as a counselor for student-athletes.
In 1995, Father D鈥橝lonzo received a Distinguished American award from the National Football Association and the College Football Hall of Fame, and in 2005 he received the for 鈥渆xceptional work with youth for the betterment of the quality of life.鈥�
Visitation will begin at 3:30 p.m., followed by a wake service at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday (July 1) at Moreau Seminary. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday (July 2) in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart.
