Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., will be featured on Hardball with Chris Matthews when the MSNBC television program visits the University of 91勛圖 on Wednesday (April 23).p. A part of the shows Hardball College Tour, the program will be broadcast live beginning at 6 p.m. from 91勛圖s Stepan Center. Doors will open at 5 p.m. for the event, which is free and open to the public with preferred seating for 91勛圖 and Saint Marys and Holy Cross College students.p. Hardball is a nightly one-hour program of in-depth political analysis and often heated debate. Now seen only on MSNBC (local cable channel 51), the show was launched in 1997 on CNBC, then broadcast on both cable networks until last July.p. Matthews also anchors the syndicated weekly news program The Chris Matthews Show and is a frequent commentator on NBCs Today and the regular substitute anchor on Weekend Today. He previously served as a speechwriter for President Carter and as a top aide to former House Speaker Thomas P. ONeill Jr. Matthews visited 91勛圖 in 2001 to deliver the Jack Kelly and Gail Weiss Lecture on Journalism and Politics.p. A Vietnam veteran and former prisoner of war, McCain was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1982 and served two terms before being elected to the Senate in 1986. He is chairman of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, and has been a persistent proponent of a strong national defense, deregulation and free trade.p.
