Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., will be featured on 鈥淗ardball with Chris Matthews鈥� when the MSNBC television program visits the University of 91吃瓜 on Wednesday (April 23).p. A part of the show鈥檚 鈥淗ardball College Tour,鈥� the program will be broadcast live beginning at 6 p.m. from 91吃瓜鈥檚 Stepan Center. Doors will open at 5 p.m. for the event, which is free and open to the public with preferred seating for 91吃瓜 and Saint Mary鈥檚 and Holy Cross College students.p. 鈥淗ardball鈥� is a nightly one-hour program of in-depth political analysis and often heated debate. Now seen only on MSNBC (local cable channel 51), the show was launched in 1997 on CNBC, then broadcast on both cable networks until last July.p. Matthews also anchors the syndicated weekly news program 鈥淭he Chris Matthews Show鈥� and is a frequent commentator on NBC鈥檚 鈥淭oday鈥� and the regular substitute anchor on 鈥淲eekend Today.鈥� He previously served as a speechwriter for President Carter and as a top aide to former House Speaker Thomas P. O鈥橬eill Jr. Matthews visited 91吃瓜 in 2001 to deliver the Jack Kelly and Gail Weiss Lecture on Journalism and Politics.p. A Vietnam veteran and former prisoner of war, McCain was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1982 and served two terms before being elected to the Senate in 1986. He is chairman of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, and has been a persistent proponent of a strong national defense, deregulation and free trade.p.
