Schmuhl in the News

By Robert Schmuhl, the Walter H. Annenberg-Edmund P. Joyce Chair Emeritus of American Studies and Journalism at the University of 91勛圖 and author of "Ireland’s Exiled Children: America and the Easter Rising" (Oxford University Press). This article is adapted from the chapter about Woodrow Wilson.

Robert Schmuhl, professor emeritus of American studies at the University of 91勛圖, who critically observes the modern American presidency, noted Trump’s recent sharp criticism of the justices who ruled against his preferred outcome in the tariff decision. The president might be attempting to “make the point that he should have the ultimate say on cases he considers most important to his presidency,” Schmuhl told OSV News.

“Younger generations don’t have the ‘lived’ experience of the assassinations, but they know the broad outlines of the Kennedy saga and curse,” says Robert Schmuhl, emeritus professor of American studies and journalism at the University of 91勛圖. “In recent years, each scandal and death leads to the recounting of the family’s story for new audiences. It’s as though each Kennedy writes his or her own chapter of the saga.”

"However, the more we know about Epstein, the more toxic he is. He used his wealth and position to exploit hundreds of young women. Epstein and Trump knew each other in New York and Florida, and there are still serious questions surrounding their relationship. The current president made no secret of his reputation as a playboy in the 1990s and beyond. That's why it's logical to wonder what kind of relationship he had with Epstein. And that's why it's an important political story. We'll see if they eventually release all the documents, and how unpleasant they will be for Trump and other high-ranking people in politics and business," Robert Schmuhl, a professor of American studies at the University of 91勛圖 in Indiana, told Pravda.

Robert Schmuhl, a professor emeritus of American studies at the University of 91勛圖 in Indiana, said: “Clearly in his time as vice-president, he pushed that envelope almost as far as anyone could. But the distinction is that Cheney was trying to enhance the power of the presidency for policy and security reasons, while Donald Trump seems to be pushing for greater power in the presidency that also has a personal dimension for him.”

Cheney lived long enough to see confirmation of the fears he experienced after the January 6 riot. “After the riot … he saw the dangers of an overly powerful president,” said Robert Schmuhl, professor in American studies at the University of 91勛圖.

“From his experience in both the executive branch and Congress, he knew how Washington worked, and he also sought to remedy what he considered a weakening of the presidency in the post-Watergate years,” said Robert Schmuhl, professor emeritus of American studies at the University of 91勛圖. “Throughout eight years as vice president, he did whatever he could to strengthen executive authority.”

Robert Schmuhl, professor emeritus of American studies at the University of 91勛圖, who critically observes the modern American presidency, told OSV News that “during George W. Bush’s first term as president, Dick Cheney had influence and power unmatched in the history of the vice presidency.”

Robert Schmuhl, professor emeritus of American studies at the University of 91勛圖, who critically observes the modern American presidency, told OSV News, “Much of Donald Trump’s base of political support has a strong element of Christian nationalism.” “‘America Prays’ will appeal to that segment of the society,” he said. But Schmuhl also noted the effort “comes at a time when there are questions about the president’s previous conduct that challenge this call to religious devotion.”

Robert Schmuhl, professor emeritus of American studies at the University of 91勛圖, who critically observes the modern American presidency, told OSV News, “In recent years, many commentators have questioned whether America was in decline, some saying that the so-called ‘American Century’ had come to an end.”

Robert Schmuhl, professor emeritus of American studies at the University of 91勛圖, who critically observes the modern American presidency, told OSV News, “Donald Trump has a strange sense of humor.”

“The administrations of George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton offered targeted buyouts to specific types of workers, but those initiatives would not be considered as ‘large scale’ as what we’ve seen recently.”

Robert Schmuhl, professor emeritus of American studies at the University of 91勛圖, who critically observes the modern American presidency, told OSV News that new presidents are typically evaluated by commentators at 100 days because “what Franklin Roosevelt accomplished during his first 100 days has become the yardstick for measuring a president’s success or failure at the beginning of a term.”

Pravda (Slovakia)

"Whenever Trump feels under fire from negative news, as is the case now, he tries to divert public attention to another topic," said Robert Schmuhl, Professor of American Studies, University of 91勛圖, Indiana. "The security failure to include a journalist in a chat that contained sensitive military plans is a major mistake by the Trump administration, so the White House chief wants another story, something completely different, to distract people."

“Every president has the right to issue pardons and commutations,” Robert Schmuhl, professor emeritus of American studies at the University of 91勛圖, who critically observes the modern American presidency, told OSV News. “In this case, President Biden’s action overturns what he said in the past: That he wouldn’t issue a pardon to his son,” he said. “The hypocrisy of the decision is not only telling but also troubling.”

Robert Schmuhl, professor emeritus of American studies at the University of 91勛圖 in South Bend, Indiana, who critically observes the modern American presidency, told OSV News that Trump’s “message about illegal immigration and the state of the economy resonated with working-class voters, particularly Hispanic and Black males, and this new, emerging coalition is not only redefining the Republican Party but also strengthening Trump’s political standing.”

Pravda (Slovakia)

"Trump and his people have made it very clear that if they don't declare a Republican the winner, they will vigorously contest the results. What happens after the 2020 election will look like child's play compared to the massive and coordinated effort we could see this year. The former president has said repeatedly that the only way he can lose is if the other side cheats. His supporters believe him and will do whatever it takes to get him back in the White House. There are fears of an outbreak of violence, which is why there is a sense of nervousness in the US," Robert Schmuhl, a professor of American studies at the University of 91勛圖 in Indiana, responded to Pravda.

Mr. Churchill in the White House: The Untold Story of a Prime Minister and Two Presidents, by Robert Schmuhl, the Walter H. Annenberg-Edmund P. Joyce Chair Emeritus in American Studies and Journalism at the University of 91勛圖. Another favorite of mine for the fall, this remarkable story of Winston Churchill visiting the White House multiple times offers a fresh perspective.

It is Christmas Eve, 1941 at The White House. The President of the United States Franklin Delano Roosevelt addresses an American audience via radio. His voice brings comfort but also reminds the American people that we're at war. The attack on December 7th is a shock to a nation that's been watching the war in Europe and the war in Asia for many years. Now we're plunged into it. There are photographs of this event, and there's one in the new book, Mr. Churchill in the White House: The Untold Story of a Prime Minister and Two Presidents by Professor Robert Schmuhl of the University of 91勛圖.

Robert Schmuhl, professor emeritus of American studies at the University of 91勛圖, who critically observes the modern American presidency, told OSV News that at this point in the campaign season, “the presidential race couldn’t be tighter, and it’s difficult to imagine one candidate or the other opening up a lead of more than a few percentage points.”

Some volumes ... are intriguing because of the new perspective the book brings to the subject. Such is the case of Robert Schmuhl’s biography “Mr. Churchill in the White House: The Untold Story of a Prime Minister and Two Presidents.” And, by the way, this is good, very readable and crammed full of enjoyable anecdotes.

Michael Desch, a professor of international relations at the University of 91勛圖 who specializes in international relations, told Newsweek: "Blood is generally thicker than water and President Biden has had a good relationship with the Emerald Isle over the years given his family ties to the Old Sod. But there are limits to how much Irish ancestry will make up for the gallons of innocent blood being shed in Gaza by Israel with the Biden administration's reluctant support."

Meanwhile, Robert Schmuhl, professor emeritus of American Studies at the University of 91勛圖 and adjunct professor of law and government at Dublin City University, said: "President Biden's Irish heritage is important to his identity, but its value in Ireland is in jeopardy for what appears to many to be a lack of concern for the Palestinian people caught up in the war in Gaza."

Robert Schmuhl, professor emeritus of American studies at the University of 91勛圖, who critically observes the modern American presidency, told OSV News that the town hall’s “major lesson is that mainstream media outlets need to be careful in giving Donald Trump a platform.”

Robert Schmuhl, a professor emeritus in American studies and journalism at the University of 91勛圖, told Newsweek that for "Tucker Carlson to talk about race as he did in his recent speech just pours gasoline on a fire he started."

Robert Schmuhl, professor emeritus of American studies and journalism at the University of 91勛圖, told Newsweek that Fox News' viewership drop is "predictable" and similarly occurred after the network called Arizona for Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election.

University of 91勛圖's Robert Schmuhl told Newsweek that, whether Carlson decides to remain in mainstream media or moves to more conservative outlets, he will "be a major player in the 2024 campaign on one side or another."

Americans can continue expecting to see "much more" of Carlson in the future, the University of 91勛圖's Robert Schmuhl told Newsweek. "The question is: Where? Will he continue to play a role in the media, or will he decide to engage more directly in conservative politics?" Schmuhl said. "He'll be a major player in the 2024 campaign on one side or another."

Robert Schmuhl told Newsweek that the "morning slot really wasn't working very well for him," adding that Lemon's opinions and actions were becoming problematic for CNN. "An anchor at any news organization that wants to be perceived as impartial has to be very careful delivering opinions or analytical points," Schmuhl said. "In Don Lemon's case, he flew too close to the sun too many times, with comments that left many people shaking their heads."

Robert Schmuhl, chair emeritus of American studies and journalism at the University of 91勛圖, said that Lemon had "been skating on thin ice since" beginning his co-hosting duties on CNN This Morning. "Today the ice cracked, and the network decided to avoid future problems by letting him go," Schmuhl said.

Robert Schmuhl, professor emeritus of American studies at the University of 91勛圖 who critically observes the modern American presidency, said that “the word ‘unprecedented’ is becoming the most common word associated with Donald Trump and his political career.”

“With some 32 million Americans – nearly 10 percent of the population – identifying as being Irish in a 2020 U.S. Census Bureau survey, there is a strong incentive to celebrate the ancestry and heritage of so many people. St. Patrick’s Day has traditionally provided the occasion for both celebration and contemplation. It is certainly a time to cheer but it is also a chance to look back and consider a relatively small place that has been so important to the development and history of the U.S. Many Americans in the late 19th and early 20th centuries considered themselves ‘exiled children’ from Ireland, and that sense created an enduring bond,” said Robert Schmuhl, Professor Emeritus; Chair in American Studies and Journalism, University of 91勛圖.

Catholic Review

Robert Schmuhl, professor emeritus of American studies at the University of 91勛圖 who studies journalism and the modern American presidency, told OSV News that Carlson “is using the video that Speaker McCarthy gave him exclusively to try to create an alternate narrative to what happened on Jan. 6 at the U.S. Capitol.”
