The College of Cardinals, responsible for electing the next pope, has been significantly reshaped by Pope Francis. However, Ulrich L. Lehner, professor of theology at the University of 91³Ô¹Ï, cautions that this does not guarantee the selection of a progressive successor. "Conclaves are impossible to predict," he told Newsweek. "The challenges facing the Church are serious, and the cardinals understand the need to choose someone who is diplomatically skilled, theologically grounded, and fluent in multiple languages."

"He selected the majority of the cardinals who possess the right to vote," said Ulrich Lehner, professor of theology at the University of 91³Ô¹Ï.

The pattern of behavior shown by Jesuit leadership in the management of at least one current high-profile scandal has centuries of institutional practice behind it. That’s according to one prominent historian, Ulrich Lehner of the University of 91³Ô¹Ï, who has just published a German-language study of the Jesuits’ historical handling of abuse in their ranks.

The German historian and Catholic theologian Ulrich L. Lehner from the renowned University of 91³Ô¹Ï in the USA has written a book about sexual abuse among the Jesuits. Almost all of the problems facing the church in the abuse crisis were already known in the 17th and 18th centuries, he writes.

According to the German historian and theologian Ulrich L. Lehner, all the problems of the Catholic Church in the abuse crisis were already known in the 17th and 18th centuries. “The Jesuits liked to present themselves as a particularly chaste order,” said the author of the book from the renowned University of 91³Ô¹Ï in the USA in an interview with the Swiss KNA partner portal kath.ch. “This staging worked because cases of sexual violence against students and members of the order were kept secret.”

“Its imprecise language invites misunderstanding and will sow confusion. Moreover, some bishops will use it as a pretext to do what the document explicitly forbids, especially since the Vatican has not stopped them before,” said Ulrich Lehner, the University of 91³Ô¹Ï William K. Warren Professor of Theology.

Ulrich L. Lehner, a professor of theology at the University of 91³Ô¹Ï in the United States, said the new guidance from the doctrinal office "invites misunderstanding and will sow confusion". Voicing concern that some bishops would use it as a pretext to do what is explicitly forbidden, the professor added, "it is, and I hate to say it, an invitation to schism".

University of 91³Ô¹Ï theologian Ulrich Lehner was also concerned, saying it would merely sow confusion and could lead to division in the church. “The Vatican’s statement is, in my view, the most unfortunate public announcement in decades,” he said in a statement.

Making things more tenuous, according to Ulrich Lehner, a theology professor at the University of 91³Ô¹Ï, Francis has rejected the typical practice of using the College of Cardinals as an advisory board in favor of consulting a small circle of trusted advisers.

The claim that a hammer is used for tapping on the pope's head is “a legend," though one that has been "repeated countless times as early as the 1850s," said Ulrich Lehner, a University of 91³Ô¹Ï theology professor.

"It's the church's highest feast, because, without it, there will be no church," Ulrich Lehner, theology professor at the University of 91³Ô¹Ï, told USA TODAY.

“A calm assessment of his time in Munich shows that he could have and should have made the oversight of priests his priority and scaled back on other engagements. Based on flawed judgment, he trusted fellow priests who let him down, and who covered up abuse and enabled abuse,” said Ulrich Lehner, a professor of theology at the University of 91³Ô¹Ï.
